TeamBath women's 1st team successfully rounded off an outstanding year by winning the BUCS Team Championship to add to the Premier League title they had already won. The team, captained by Caroline Rosamond (3rd year Sports Performance), beat Durham in the semi final on a tie break shoot out having drawn the match 3 rubbers all. Wins from Steph Cornish (2nd year Economics) and Alex Walker (1st Year Sports Performance) in their singles gave Bath a 2-0 lead.

Caroline and Barbara Pietrkiewicz (1st year International Management) both lost their singles in tight matches meaning it was all to play for in the doubles. Steph and Alex pulled out a good win on a third set tie break, with Alex serving a huge ace out wide at 8-8. Katie Jessop (1st year Coach Education) teamed up with Caroline but went down in a closely fought match. Barbara and Steph dominated their opponents to win the deciding tie break shoot out by winning both their tie breaks setting up the final against Loughborough.

The final saw Bath dominate from the start. Steph, Alex and Barbara all putting good wins on the board putting Bath 3-1 up after singles. Steph and Alex then teamed up to maintain their 100% record for the season and win the match that ensured Bath were champions.

Coach James Andell said "The girls have been outstanding all season both on and off court. They fight for everything and work hard for each other. The team spirit has been fantastic all year"

TeamBath Mens team unfortunately lost to Loughborough at the semi final stage. The Men, who had earlier in the season won the Premier League, played and fought well but Loughborough proved too strong.

Toby Mitchell Wins the 32nd Tashkent ITF Junior Doubles Title in Uzbekistan Print E-mail
Monday, 26 March 2012 20:18

It has been a tough week with extreme whether conditions for this time of the year in Tashkent Uzbekistan in Central Asia! 4 inches of snow on the first few days of the Main Draw pushed the competition indoors onto 3 courts. The organisers were very efficient and as soon as the snow stopped, courts were cleared and play started outside in the freezing weather, Toby and Callum's first round doubles match was one of the first evening matches played after the snow and during the freezing cold weather (minus 5) which made it really tough to get a first round win against a Latvia and Uzbekistan pairing!

However a 3rd set tie break win enabled them to reach the quarter finals which they found a lot easier due to the improved weather conditions. They soon came up against the Singles No1 and 2 seeded players who were playing as the doubles no1 seeds. Toby and Callum by now had settled into the competition, having moved accommodation, they won comfortably to take then through to the final which was played Friday at 11:30am against a Russian pairing.

This competition was certainly tough, the organisers were superb, the people friendly and the translator made the tournament, sorting out money, transport, Sim Cards and anything else that was required. A great experience has been had by all. Toby Mitchell trains at Team Bath MCTA and Callum Poland Smith is trained by Gino Demichelli at Hackney City Tennis Club.

Wednesday, 30 November 2011 11:07

Alex Walker and Marshall Tutu (both Sports Performance) have been selected to represent the Great Britain Universities team in France at the prestigious BNP Paribas event at the start of December. The annual event sees 8 Nations including France, America and China compete over 3 days in a Davis Cup / Fed Cup format and is a high level international event with the French usually having players ranked around 250 WTA / ATP and America bringing over their top ranked college players.

The event is a great chance for both players to gain some international experience and put themselves in the frame for World University Games in Russia 2013 – the second largest multi sport event in the world. It comes on the back of both players working hard on their tennis whilst also obtaining a degree as both players have been out competing in $10 / 25k events as well as British tours.

TeamBath MCTA Performance Coach James Andell said “I am delighted both players have been selected to represent GB. Both players are training extremely hard and have had some good results in the past few months, especially Alex who won a round of the $10k last week at Loughborough as well as making the semis of doubles the same week.”
