Wesley Moodie and Stephen Huss marked their doubles reunion in the best possible fashion by winning the Challenger title in Kuala Lumpur in their first tournament together in over a year. Moodie and Huss, who shot to fame in 2005 when they captured the Wimbledon doubles title as qualifiers, defeated Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 7-6(10), 6-3 in the final in Malaysia. “I was happy with the win,” said Moodie, who jumped eight places to No. 53 in the ATP doubles rankings. “I had played pretty well throughout the tournament so it was nice to end off with a win. It was an extremely tight first set tie-break and we were probably lucky to win it. Then we played a good return game to break in the second set.” The doubles title capped a good week for Monte-Carlo Academy star Moodie, who also reached the semifinals in the singles. The 28-year-old South African recorded straight sets wins over Bopanna and Qureshi in the opening two rounds and followed with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against countryman Rik de Voest in the quarterfinals before going down against former Top 10 Rainer Schuettler. “Schuettler played very well,” added Moodie. “It was physically very tough to play in those conditions. He said he had had a few long matches early in the tournament which he thought had helped him adjust. I didn’t play great but it was largely due to the conditions.” Moodie, who moved up 34 places to No. 170 in the singles rankings, now travels to India to compete in the OCR ATP Challenger. Seeded No. 7, Moodie faces Indian Karan Rostogie in the singles draw and teams up with de Voest as the top seeds in the doubles. |
