Mixed Week for MCTA Players Hi all, The past few days have seen some mixed results for the Academy. Ilija made it thru to the round of 16 with two impressive displays against American opponents, whilst Anna went out to the number 15 seed in a close three set match. Oscar came up against the winner from El Paso in his first round qualies match (who made it thru to the last 16 of the main draw) and managed to push him all the way but didn’t take chances and hence couldn’t get over the line. It is pleasing to see Ilija keep moving in the right direction tennis wise and he has certainly warmed to the environment of the MCTA. The language barrier makes it tough for him at times but his ever enthusiastic and outgoing personality I feel has shone thru this week. The training has been slightly less specific this week with more competitive and realistic situations being set up on the practice court and the players have continued to work hard. There are always a large number of players entering the junior tournaments in the US, creating a very competitive depth of playing standards. This depth means that most, (many of whom are not overly talented players), thrive in the heat of battle and are mentally tougher for it. It is these kind of matches which are so valuable to our players whilst here and they can certainly all learn the value and the rewards gained from becoming more competitive!!! This leg of the trip has passed so quickly. Jez left this afternoon with Oscar to drive to the next venue in Boca Raton, Florida. It will probably take him about 9 or so hours although if he is in the zone then that may be cut to 8 possibly less. The rest of us will fly on Sunday to Miami where we are renting some apartments for the next month. Until then, Take care from South Carolina Hampo |
