When hitting the second serve, the trajectory of the ball should take the shape of an arc. This gives the serve margin over the net and also down into the service box, thus allowing the ball to jump up at an opponent, making it difficult for them to take on the return. The following are some technical tips to try to improve the shape on your second serve. 1. Compare 3 videos of Stefania Boffa. Picture 1 is the still of the video one frame before contact where you see Stefi reaching with her arms without stepping forward positively, which causes her upper body to collapse and her behind to stick out (typical picture of negative footwork) Still of video 2 one frame before contact shows slight overreach but very good forward step so the upper body does not collapse. |

In this video clip George Bastl (who beat Sampras in his last Wimbledon) wrong foots MCTA Player Ilija Vucic twice in a row. It is always a good idea to test your opponent by serving and then placing the ball back to the side that you have served to, as many players make the error that Ilija has made, looking to cover the open court rather than balancing properly to be ready to move either way.
